Crosskey Architects is pleased to be participating in AIA Connecticut’s 2018 Canstruction event! We are partnering with one of Classical Magnet School’s stellar art classes to bring our collaborative Rainbow CAN-nection design to life.
The Rainbow CANnection idea was created during a design charrette with the middle school class. Students brainstormed ideas and presented them to their classmates before voting on their favorite. Then, volunteers from Crosskey Architects took the winning sketch and created a 3D model to demonstrate how the design could be constructed out of cans. Our team will continue to visit the classroom over the coming months to prepare for the build date, work on fundraising, and refine the design during a test-build day.
In addition to raising canned food donations for the Connecticut Food Bank in Wallingford, Canstruction presents a great opportunity to become involved with local schools and share the creative side of architecture with a hands-on activity. Students will learn about the design process as we help take their ideas from imagination to reality.
Our team will need to raise a total of 1,066 cans to complete our Rainbow CANnection dream! That total breaks down into 148 red cans, 98 yellow cans, 66 green cans, 58 blue cans, 74 black cans, 204 white cans, and 418 standard-size cans (14.5 oz.) of any color to construct the interior of the rainbow. Please refer to our flyer for suggested brands and more information on how to donate.
The final build will occur next spring at the Connecticut Food Bank in Wallingford, CT where all cans will be donated after the build. Stay tuned for updates!
